Dwarf Birds Nest Spruce In Container With Annuals Advisable?

I want to put the dwarf nest spruce in a half wine barrel container, and maybe some wave petunias for color around the edge, which your website suggests is ok. Another site said there should be nothing around the spruce as they die if there is, what’s your take in this?

I didn't find any such dire warnings. I think it would be fine. The bird's nest spruce is slow growing and not a heavy feeder so I can't see that it would hurt to include petunias with it. Just be sure there is ample room for the shrub and you don't overwater.
