Does leaf mold help or is garden vegetable compost better?

I would not put uncomposted, and molded leaves in there. That will almost guarantee that the soil gets an infection. Vegetable compost would be a much better choice, as this material is already well composted, and the likelyhood that you run into a mold issue will be significantly reduced.
