Drought tolerant planting in older garden

I am working with children from age 7 to 9 at a school in the foothills of Glendale, CA. We are trying to refurbish an old garden in full afternoon sun. Currently, there are many older agapanthus that need to be divided. It is warm these days and I wonder if I would kill them by digging them up at this late date. We also have a tree stump, some geraniums, and some paper whites, as well as a type of daisy. I am planning on planting some succulents, as this area get very little water. Please advise as to what to do.

What a wonderful project and garden undertaking!

I first would like to caution you on the Agapanthus. Yes, it can be lifted and divided, but all parts of the plant are considered toxic. It is poisonous if ingested and the plant is a skin irritant.
I would recommend the children not handle the plant and you should use gloves and long sleeves while working around the plant.

Lift the Agapanthus in the early morning hours before the sun gets too warm. Watering well in the 48 hours leading up to the move will help loosen the roots.

Are you growing strictly ornamental plants and flowers or are you growing vegetables and herbs?
Full sun is an excellent location for most vegetables and herbs and many flowers will flourish also.
