Dracaena

Question

I have a Dracaena that belonged to my late uncle. I transplanted it so that the soil would be new but not to a new pot. It looked great for a few days but started getting mushy at the top after all the leaves fell off! I researched some things and the only thing I found that sounded like my problem said to cut off the mushy part and it would be fine. Is this true? I did it but I’m nervous that it won’t survive. FYI: I’m normally great with plants so I really don’t know what I’ve done wrong! The Dracaena has a skinny stalk and really spiky leaves. Never was able to determine exactly what type it is since there are so many different types. Thanks in advance!

Is the soil too wet? Check drainage of the pot. It sounds like it may have a fungus or root rot. Check the roots and see if they seem mushy. If it has root rot, trimming it back would have reduced the load on the damaged roots and would improve the health of the plant. Again, cutting off the infected parts can help because it removes some of the disease, but you can’t cut parts off forever, right? So, also treat the plant with a fungicide to clear up any possible fungus.
