Dogwood tree showing signs of dead wood in hole on trunk

I have a 20+ year old dogwood. It had multiple “holes” in it from where old branches were and died and fell off then the tree healed itself and grew bark around it. I noticed in the largest hole the inner wood is soft and you can just dig it out. I also noticed a slime trail leading about the tree from hole to hole, which I am guessing is a snail. My question is, could this snail be killing my dogwood and causing the soft wood in the hole? I have attached an image of what I mean by “hole”. The pic is not of my dogwood just a general pic. Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

Your tree is most likely has an infestation of Dogwood Borer.

Do borers leave slime trails though?
