Dogwood Did Not Leaf Out This Spring

Planted two Dogwoods last year. One leafed out normally, but the second one did not and now we are noticing it is leafing where the trunk and limbs come together. What do we do? Should we trim limbs back or leave as is?

It may be possible that the second’s branches have mostly died and is now trying to regrow the branches. Trees planted under a year can experience significant dieback in the winter sometimes.

I would trim away anything that is dead. This article will help you with that:

Leave what is living for this year. Give the tree a chance to regrow a bit and by next year you should be able to prune to give the tree a proper shape again.
