Gardening Know How Questions & Answers - https://questions.gardeningknowhow.comdoes topping a young eucalyptus promote upward growth? My neighbor topped a silver dollar eucalyptus stating that it would promote upward growth. I have never heard of topping to promote anything other than girth and fullness. At least that is my experience. Can you verify her statement?

Topping the tree can cause some issues.
Dormant buds that are below the topping cuts will sprout and quickly grow back to the original height.
These sprouts are weakly attached to the outer rings of the original tree rings.
These sprouts can easily be torn by wind or weight.
Open wounds on the tree become susceptible to disease.
