Does Painting Fruit Tree Trunks Help Against Minnesota Winter Cold?

My Apple trees are having problems surviving Minnesota Zone 3 winters. What can help? We also have a lot of deer, though we fenced the orchard.

The best thing you can do is make sure your trees are rated for zone 3 hardiness. Painting trees helps prevent sunscald in winter.
