Q.Does Companion Planting Apply When Plants Are In Separate Containers?

my wife wants me to build her an herb planter. I want to build a multi tiered ladder, will the herbs on different levels effect each other?

This sounds like a great project. It's not just shared soil that makes plants good for one another or not, but the insects they attract or repel and other factors. Most herbs grow well together if containerized; here's an article:
