bird of paradise plant

Does a bird of paradise plant need to be planted up to the trunk or leave the rhizome exposed? I received this plant from my son. It was hurting. I removed brown dried up leaves and scale. Now I need to learn what to do to make it thrive.

If planting outdoors in ground, it is best to keep it at the same depth as the height of the root ball (or same as the container its currently in).
