plum tree shoots

Do I trim the lower shoots of a 3 year old plum tree? A large number of shoots are sprouting from the base of the tree. Do I cut them off?

The suckers that appear at the base of a tree can be trimmed away as they grow.
Pruning information is in the link provided.
