Dividing Succulents In The Ground

You have several helpful articles about dividing or propagating succulents, but they are all for potted plants. My succulents are in the ground and putting off pups. How can I safely divide them without seeing the roots. Do I need to dig up the whole plant?

It was hard to find anything just for outdoor, but I didn't see anything that said to dig up the clump. Here is more:
