can you divide lavender?

Though I often see instructions to divide a Lavender, it is unlikely to survive.

Lavenders are woody shrubs and if you split one down the middle, it will die.
Sometime a plant will have a naturally growing off shoot and these may be able to be dug up and transplanted.
