Difference Between Male and Female Plants

How can you tell the difference between male and female flowers on squash plants? Someone told me it has to do with the points on the end of the flower. Some have 4 and some have 5. Which is male and which is female? Also. which one will give squash? I have been picking my flowers, as I make a batter and then fry them in the batter. My whole family likes them this way, but I would also like to leave some on the plant to get squash. . . but don’t know which flowers to leave on. Can you answer my question? I really would appreciate any information you can give me.
