determining species of tree

I purchased a so-called Lime tree. When bought, it had several lime like fruits, which fell off shortly after being replanted. Tree has grown approximately 32 in. in the past year but now has very long 2-3 in very sharp spines or briars all over the trunk and new limbs at the base of all new growth. There were no spines at all on it a year ago. It shows no sign at this time of beginning to fruit or bloom. What do I actually have? Any ideas?

Both Mexican and Tahiti limes have thorns.
