Q.deer protection with electric fence

Zone Bozeman, MT | Anthea added on February 2, 2015 | Answered

Have three large raised beds built in the backyard of my new home in the country. Know next to nothing about growing vegetables but thought I would figure out how to keep the deer out first. Encircling these three beds with electric wire with something to attract the deer on the wire to “behavioral” train them not to come sounds like a good idea. Does it work and should I invest in this?

Thanks

The only sure way to keep deer from your garden is to build an 8-fence. If you don't want to build a fence, an electric wire can work. A single strand may be sufficient if the deer population is light, but for a heavier population, you may need two or three strands.

Regarding training the deer, use sometime like peanut butter smeared on aluminum foil. It won't harm the deer, but it will discourage them. Some people use odor repellents in conjunction with electric fences.
