Dead Yucca

Question

I had a tall yucca tree for some years and this winter all the leaves have fallen off. The tree was protected under another tree, although it was covered in snow in the harsh winter. I notice that other gardens have yuccas which have not befallen the same fate as mine, even though they are in an open space and not with any cover. What has happened to mine? If I trim it down, will it start to grw again?
