Dead Leaves on Yucca Plant

Question

There is healthy growth of green leaves on top of my yucca outdoor tree, but the leaves underneath the healthy growth have died. Can I just cut off the dead leaves without this having a detrimental effect on the healthy growth? If I cut off the dead leaves, should I cut near to the trunk or a few inches from the trunk?
