Gardening Know How Questions & Answers - https://questions.gardeningknowhow.comI use 2-4D to kill dandelion and have for 38 years on my farm. This is 1st time I noticed that even after I had sprayed them when they had the yellow flower head, of course they died, the yellow flower head had turned into a white puffball to my amazement! Will these white puffballs on these dead dandelions be able to blow seed? If this is so, they will then be impossible to get rid of, as I had never noticed this ever before. Most of my spraying is done in the fall with Esther 2,4 D to get it down to the root and have really good performance but had missed some areas in which I then sprayed in the spring with Amine 2-4D. My father, who is a farmer, feels that after they are sprayed, even with the white puff ball still forming, that the seed would be no good. What do you think is the answer to my question? Thank you very much for helping me.

My understanding of how 2-4D works–that is is slow. Therefore if the puff ball forms and seeds form they would not necessarily be sterile.
It is recommended that you use 2-4D in June and after Labor Day.
