To prevent damping off, start with sterilized potting/seed starting mix. Start with soilless mix that yields just a drop or two of water when squeezed in your fist. So water the mix before filling containers, add seed then cover the seed with vermiculite. Maintain good air circulation, as with a fan, and keep soil moist/damp, not wet. Damping off is a fungal disease and once a plant is infected it’s a goner. If you search for “damping off treatment” you will see home remedies. None has been proven to work in the lab but that may just mean it hasn’t been studied.
