Crepe Myrtle Tree Roots

Can I cover the roots of a crepe myrtle tree with soil to plant a flower garden around the base? Will it hurt/kill the tree?

Covering the roots can hurt the tree by smothering the roots. You may be able to so a few inches, but I would not do anymore than that.
