The wet sticky residue is most likely honeydew secreted by sucking insects like aphids, scales, and white flies that feed on the leaves. This is likely the reason for your yellowing leaves as well. Most likely you have aphids. I would treat the tree with neem oil. This will kill the pests without harming people, pets or beneficial bugs. Here is more information:
