Q.Crepe Myrtle Thought Dead The Leaves Came From Bottom.

Zone 63630 | Nanalaa added on May 29, 2020 | Answered

These bushes were planted last year But no leaves appeared when supposed to have. Now at the end of May leaves are appearing from the bottom. Should I cut the dead branches off now?

Most Crepe Myrtle cultivars are not fully hardy in your area. Most are only hardy down to zone 7, and you are zone 6. There are a few that can survive without dying to the soil each year, but unless it was specifically stated on the plant then it is probably not hardy in your area.

If this is the case, then this is the behavior that you will expect each year.

Cut back all dead growth each year, during dormancy, or when needed.
