Crepe Myrtle Root Has Been Gnawed

After the recent big wind here in eastern Virginia, I noticed a small crepe myrtle has blown over. When I picked it up, I noticed that the root had been completely gnawed away (and I found a burrow where the root used to be!). The nub of the root is covered with tooth marks. Could this have been a vole? We have lots of moles here and I’ve read that voles use the mole tunnels. I have lost vegetables to voles, but this is new. Everyone here has crepe myrtle. How did they all survive?
