Crepe Myrtle Pruning

We have a young crepe myrtle which grew probably from seed/birds. We would like to prune off 3 branches at the bottom to keep it from bushing and grow taller. We are in Zone 8. Should we wait until fall to remove these for next year’s growth, or to improve the border appearance this summer, will the tree thrive if they are removed now? It is now about 5 feet tall.
