Gardening Know How Questions & Answers - https://questions.gardeningknowhow.comI see that they have shallow root systems. I have an ugly plain grassy area where the septic is and would like to plant crepe myrtles nearby. How far away should I keep them? We get a lot of rain here. Thanks

I wouldn't recommend planting within 5 feet of a septic tank. Although it wouldn't be capable of doing any damage, the tank will, no doubt, have to be replaced one day. Being too close to this will ultimately result in a dead shrub. Some grasses, such as zoysia will grow well over septic tanks, but this patch of empty could be a sign of damage to the tank. If nothing will grow there, it could be an indication that the tank needs to be checked. Here is more information on growing near septic fields:
