Crepe Myrtle – Curled, Brown Leaves

I bought two crepe myrtles and had them planted by a nursery. I notice there are curled, brown-black leaves on most of the leader branches while the inner leaves are green. The brown leaves are at the tips of these branches. Is this a disease, and if so, how would I treat it? The trees are about 6′ tall and are made up of five medium-thin branches that are staked.

This usually indicates a watering issue. Either the trees are not getting enough water or there is something affecting the roots that is preventing the roots from taking up water.
