Crepe Myrtle

I noticed some crepe myrtle trunks that appeared to be oiled. Is that a special species or is an oil product applied? If oil, what product might it be?

There may be some cultivators that appear to have a darker trunk.

Also they may have been sprayed with a horticultural oil.
