crepe myrtle

I have a crepe myrtle tree that in the last couple of days has been covered from ground trunk to tree top in a cottony web. The trunk and branches are now covered in this thick, white, cottony web. I pulled some of the webbing off the tree and see no insects, no cocoon like material clinging to the web…just the web. What is it and what should I do? This is a tree that is almost as tall as my two story house. Hope you can shed some light on this problem. Thank you.
