Crepe Myrtle Trees

I love the flowering crepe myrtle tree and would love a couple in my huge yard (3 acres, mowed). The only problem is, will it grow in western New York, because of our winters or should I go with a rose of sharon? I am just starting to landscape my yard and need color without bother!

This is dependent on the variety–some are hardy to Zone 6. Also, given adequate winter protection (i.e.-winter wrapping), there are some people who have had luck growing these plants in colder areas. I would first check the hardiness of the Crepe myrtle variety you are thinking about. Otherwise, go with the Rose of Sharon.
