Q.Crepe Mrytle Tree Bark

Anonymous added on July 20, 2011 | Answered

The bark on our 20 year old Crepe Mrytle tree is beginning to peel off in long strips. We have never seen this happen before. We live in San Diego County about 2 miles from the Pacific Ocean. The tree gets 8 hours of sunshine everyday and the tree gets sufficient water everyday. No pests are on the tree.

This is very normal for a mature crepe myrtle. Immature trees do not lose bark but once they reach full maturity, they start to shed bark and this creates additional winter interest on the tree.
