Crepe Myrtle

We’ve had a crepe myrtle for several years and it has bloomed each year. I have been careful to trim the dead limbs, which have been minor. This year I noticed several dead branches and some grey, flaking bark on the lower limbs. The bush is very sparce with blooms. I once again carefully trimmed the dead branches. What is wrong with the bush?

What you are describing sounds like lichen. This is harmless to the tree, though tends to affect trees that are stressed, which sounds like yours may be with the dying limbs. Here is more information:

If the tree is stressed, this would be a reason for poor flowering. For additional suggestions, this article will help: https://www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/trees/crepe-myrtle/crepe-myrtle-not-blooming.htm [2]
