Crape Myrtle Trees – Shrubs

I have notice here in central Texas, people plant crape myrtle trees right up against the house. What can you tell me about this and any info regarding their root system. How close to house, water or sewer lines can I safely plant a crape myrtle tree? I desparately need shade on one side of my home, but that is where the sewer line and water lines are.

While they generally do not have very extensive root systems, these trees should be planted at least 5-10 feet from foundations and other structures.
