Crape Myrtle ‘Deadheading’

I am told that ‘deadheading’ will encourage Crape Myrtles to re-bloom. Since they bloomed early this year in June (in Maryland’s Baltimore-Washington, DC corridor it seems to be usually August), I would like to try this. However, immediately below each spent flower is a small ‘BB’ sized sphere. Should I leave or remove that sphere with the withered flower? What is that sphere?
