Crape Myrtle Root Growth

I saw that when you plant the tree that the root ball is at the top of the soil. Does this mean that the roots do not extend too far into the soil, like a ficus might?

Crepe myrtle trees do not have extensive root systems. This is why many are chosen as landscape plants around the home.
