Could my gardenia bushes be saved?

Is my gardenia dead or alive? I bought two gardenia trees 3 months ago. When I first got them, they were abundant with flower buds and lush green leaves. I brought them home and kept them in the house next to the window and soon the leaves started turning yellow. I put the trees outside and the buds have dropped off and ALL the leaves are dried out and brown. I think the trunk of the tree is still alive. Not sure what to do with the plants. Should I repot them in bigger pots and use acidic fertilizer? Should I trim all the dead leaves off? Is there hope?

Hi debilcious,

To stop the yellowing you can use cornstarch and fertilize with a product for acid loving plants. You can read my success story with my gardenia and what I did to baby it, on my blog. Just search for “Masochist or gardenia lover”. I have my first open blossom of the season with many other buds waiting to open.

I really enjoyed reading your blog! The suicidal gardenia thread was hilarious. I think I’m going to pitch them. The leaves are completely brown and dry. I feel terrible about giving up on them but I think they’re probably too far gone. Good luck to you with yours. You’re doing a much better job than I have!!

Thank you for taking the time to read my blog!

Gardenias are one of the most fussy plants I’ve ever owned. Mine was doing really well until yesterday. I forgot to water it before going to work. I found 2 of the buds had drooped and I know I will lose them. But at least another opened up.

I hope you try it again next year. Good luck!

Thanks,
