clematis one branch dying

Hello. Refer to photo on left. The branch is dying…What causing it? I got 2 branch on summer that died like this ..Is there anything I can do ?Please help.

It appears to be root damage. It is possible that there are moles nearby. If there are no signs then of pests, then it sould be a fungal issue, but usually that affects the whole plant.
