Citrus peel appearance

Why does the peel of lemons show rough bumpy skin? I know botrytis can be a reason but are there any other reasons? How can I grow lemons with a smoother skin?

The bumpy skin is most likely due to environmental influences. Atypical weather is the most common cause.
