Can a christmas cactus be split in half?

I was elected to keep my father-in-law’s cactus alive. It is 100 years old. I did re-pot it once and it got so big. I was wondering if I could split it in half and re-pot both?

A christmas cactus isn’t usually divided at the roots. The size of a christmas cactus is typically kept in check via pruning. You can remove up to one-third of the plant per year by pruning – give the stems a quick twist between one of the segments or use a sharp knife/scissors to remove segments.
