Chewed Leaves

We have two gardenias in self-watering pots in a lightly shaded position, as they suffered in direct sunlight. The leaves on both plants have been badly chewed, many to the point of no leaf remaining. Have not yet detected the grubs responsible. Please advise on what action to take. There are about six buds ready to flower on one and none on the second. Leaf color is a healthy green and flowers seem okay.

I would suspect that it is slugs. They tend to creep in at night, chew up leaves and be gone by morning. To test to see if it is slugs, leave a pan of beer nearby overnight. If it is slugs, you will find a few in the beer in the morning.
