when is the best time to plant a chaste tree? Is Jan. in Southport NC too early?

The best time to plant trees and shrubs is in the fall. The next optimal time is in the spring. I would say January is a little too soon even though your winters are fairly mild.

Wait till after the threat of frost has passed.
