Caterpillars on My Petunias

I live in Phoenix, Arizona. It is June and my petunias were blooming and cascading out of their pots on my porch, then the flowers were eaten and I found green caterpillars. Is there a home pest solution I can make and use, or is it better to just by a pesticide for these PESTS?
