care of trumpet vines and clematis.

Do you cut trumpet vines and clematis back in the fall? We get a lot of snow and very cold. I just planted the trumpet vine, and the care instructions are rather sketchy on the tag. We’ve had the clematis for several years, and it does fine, but I have never cut it back. The only thing is that when it blooms it does so on brown, dried out looking vines, which makes me wonder if I should cut it back yearly so that the vines are new and green? Thanks.
