Q.Can You Top A Pecan Tree ?

Zone 44202 | pattihabby added on June 3, 2020 | Answered

I was wondering if you can cut the top off pecan trees (like you do apple trees) to keep the branches arching downward ? Thank You for your article on pruning pecan trees, but I’m hoping to be able to top them ! Patti

Doing so will, usually, lead to unstable and weak structure. In essence, the tree will fall apart from its own weight well before it gets old if you top it.

Some trees respond well to topping, while others are best left to their own shape, for structure's sake.
