Q.Can you store winter squash in a cooler in garage not heated. Or bring in to spare room in house that is kept very cold and put in a
cooler in that room?

As long as the room stays between 50-55 degrees, then it will be fine. If it is above or below that, then you will need to choose a different storage location.
