rooting bunny ear cactus in water

Can you root bunny ear cactus in water? Someone gave me cactus cuttings and I know nothing about rooting/growing them. I think it’s a bunny ear but not sure. It is paddle type with very soft thorns not sure if it is a bunny ear or not. Please help. Do you root it in water or cactus soil? I don’t want to kill it!

Propagating in water will not work with a cactus.
