Gardening Know How Questions & Answers - https://questions.gardeningknowhow.comCan you put a small layer of leaves under cardboard in the fall in the garden? We have had a conventional garden for years. We don’t do compost bin. We just throw our scraps out (sometimes I bury them) all winter. My husband usually roto tills leaves and vegetation in the fall and spring, we plant and put grass clippings around the plants. This way costs a lot in water. I’m wondering about putting down cardboard and then compost from the county collection on top and we would stop roto tilling. We have a lot of leaves so I thought I could put a small layer under the cardboard. But I’ve read where leaves are hard to break down. I would have to start composting my scraps and leaves but it is mostly frozen here from mid November till March so the compost wouldn’t get warm. Do you have ideas for either the cardboard laying down or compost?

You can use the cardboard to create a flat composting site utilizing the leaves.
