I have a problems w/squirrels eating my bulbs shortly after planting. Can I start them inside then transplant after they have a little size on them?

Yes, you sure can start your gladiolas in pots indoors. Start your corms about 4 weeks before the last frost.
I have done this many times myself, since I live in Zone 4.

Here is a great article to help you get started.
