Can my Irises be saved?

Our bearded Irises bloomed in May and were finished blooming so my husband dug them all up to divide and replant. He (not knowing) cut back ALL the fan leaves right down to the bulbs/rhizomes! Can they still be planted and will they bloom again? Do they really need a few inches of the fan leaves left on? If they can be saved, how do we store them now…we were wanting to ship some to friends in other states. Thanks for your help!

I think I would replant the iris right now, and hope for the best. If any grow and flower next year, you can let those rhizomes “fatten up” before you lift them and send them to your friends.
