can lichens be safely used for composting?

I have a potting shed and a glass house which are covered with lichens. Whilst they are reasonably easy to remove en masse, it is a spongy texture and seems to have some “soil” component also. Rather than chuck it out, can it be safely used in composting?

You should have no issues composting the Lichen material that is growing on the structure.
As long as the Lichen is not attached to a diseased plant material you can safely add it to the compost.
